Mosquitoes Found Here
Over 60 species of mosquitoes have been identified from the state of Illinois. Of these, 48 species have been identified from the South Cook County Mosquito Abatement District. Most of these species are unimportant as nuisance or disease vectors. In a typical year over 90% of the mosquitoes found in the SCCMAD are 3 species, Aedes vexans, Culex pipiens, and Culex restuans. Unfortunately, Aedes vexans is a major nuisance species and Culex pipiens is the probable human vector of West Nile Virus in Illinois.
Recent mosquito invaders have also been found in Illinois, Aedes albopictus was first found in 1986 and Ochlerotatus japonicus was found in 2006. Psorophora ciliata is the largest mosquito in Illinois. Ochlerotatus triseriatus is the vector for LaCrosse Encephalitis. |
